South Africa is currently in the global spotlight as the host nation for the World Cup, an international spectacle that has helped shed light on the wonderment of its culture. Part of that intricate culture is an embedded love of music which has aided South Africans in their attempts to express the tragedies that have encroached upon their recent lives. Though certainly not known for hip-hop, South Africa is host to an amazing group called “Tumi and the Volume” that fuses hip-hop, jazz and soul with the irrevocable roots of South African culture. Out of Johannesburg, Tumi and the Volume has a sound reminiscent of K’naan, creating songs that are so clearly full of passion and pain, yet form joy through music. Be sure to listen+ download “Reality Check” below, a song off the groups latest album “Pick A Dream” available here.
